An Illinois tax notice needs to be reviewed on its own terms. The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) and the IRS maintain separate accounts and follow different procedures. A federal payment agreement does not resolve an Illinois balance.
If you cannot pay an Illinois delinquency in full because of financial hardship, IDOR allows you to request an installment plan. We review the notice, the balance and your financial records to assess the request and the information the department needs. See IDOR’s official payment-plan guidance.
IDOR can use liens and levies to collect past-due tax. If you receive a collection notice, have it reviewed promptly. We identify the action involved and evaluate the available response. Hiring a representative does not by itself stop collections. Read the department’s collection-process explanation.
We help identify missing filings, organize records and prepare required returns. If a notice reflects a possible error, we review the supporting documents and applicable response process. Learn about unfiled tax return help and Illinois tax preparation.
Review the account. We begin with your notices, tax years, filing history and deadlines. With the required authorization, we communicate with the tax authority about your case.
Address the records and filings. We explain what is missing and what work is needed. A proposed payment or other resolution should be based on an accurate picture of the account.
Evaluate the options. We consider your income, expenses, assets and the agency’s requirements. We explain the proposed work, the requested information and the next steps. Approval and terms depend on the tax authority.
We review federal and Illinois balances separately and coordinate the work around both obligations. Visit our IRS tax resolution page for federal matters.
We can discuss your case by phone and work through our online document process. Ask us how to provide your records when scheduling your consultation.
Have your latest notice, any approaching response date, the years involved and an estimate of the balance ready. Let us know if you have received a lien or levy notice, or if returns remain unfiled.
